# AI Keys

> Bring your own Anthropic or OpenAI API key to power AI generation in your workspace.

> **Plan:** This section is visible only to workspaces with a **Lifetime** grant. If you do not see **AI keys** in Settings, your account does not include this feature.

Lifetime accounts use bring-your-own-key (BYOK) for AI-powered features — campaign generation, template refinement, and AI suggestions all run against your own API key. This keeps your AI usage under your control and means AI generation does not consume Caramel credits.

Navigate to **Settings → AI keys** or go to `?section=byok-keys`.

## Supported providers

| Provider | Used for |
|---|---|
| **Anthropic (Claude)** | Campaign generation, AI template writing, content suggestions |
| **OpenAI** | Alternative generation engine; some features may use one or both providers |

## Add a key

1. Click **Add key** on the provider card.
2. Enter your API key from your Anthropic Console or OpenAI dashboard.
3. Optionally select a preferred model from the dropdown (the default is recommended for most workspaces).
4. Click **Save**.

The key is stored securely and never shown in full after saving. A status badge confirms whether the key is active.

## Remove a key

Click the delete icon on a saved key. A confirmation dialog asks you to type the provider name before the key is removed.

> **What happens without a key:** If you remove a key and no other key is configured for that provider, AI generation features that rely on that provider will be unavailable. You will see a prompt to add a key when you try to use those features.

## New to Lifetime?

If your Lifetime grant was issued within the past seven days and you have not added any keys yet, the page shows a welcome card walking you through the setup. Add at least one key to unlock AI generation across your workspace.
